A Study to Determine the Effect of Organization-Based Self-Esteem and Emotional Commitment on Organizational Citizenship Behavior

Abstract
Background. It is evident that individual differences and self-perceptions play a crucial role in voluntary behaviors exhibited within organizations. Clearly, an organizational environment that facilitates the emergence of these differences can significantly enhance positive attitudes and behaviors. When employees are provided with an environment that allows for self-actualization, they are more likely to develop a strong emotional commitment to the organization and exhibit a tendency to fulfill their roles and responsibilities with additional effort.
Aim. To examine the effects of organization-based self-esteem and emotional commitment on organizational citizenship behavior.
Method. A survey was conducted on 314 public and private sector employees operating in Mersin province through convenience sampling. SPSS and YEM SmartPLS programs were used in the analysis of the obtained data.
Findings. It has been determined that organization-based self-esteem and emotional commitment have a significant and positive effect on organizational citizenship behavior. However, emotional commitment was found to have a significant and positive impact only on the altruism dimension of organizational citizenship behavior.
Conclusion. It is possible to assert that organization-based self-esteem and emotional commitment have a significant impact on voluntary employee behaviors, which are known to enhance success and performance in organizations. Especially, it is believed organization-based self-esteem makes significant contribution by highlighting importance of individual expectations in organizational dynamics.
